Why does elaborative rehearsal work
Maintenance Rehearsal is not quite the best technique to use in order to store memory, but this process is still used regularly by millions of people.
Elaborative Rehearsal is a technique which makes memorizing information meaningful. Unlike Maintenance Rehearsal, this process is not about repeating words and thoughts over and over again, but instead involves thinking about the meaning of the term to be remembered. To make this happen, one must relate the information to prior knowledge, make the information personally meaningful, which then leads to a much stronger Long-Term Memory.
By making personal connections to words and terms, it will make it much easier to store this memory for a longer period of time, resulting in this information to be permanently kept in Long-Term Memory. A personal experience I have in which relates to Maintenance and Elaborative Rehearsal is when I was studying for a vocabulary test in my AP Spanish class in high school.
I did not study for the test the night before because I thought I would easily be able to study for it within the first 10 minutes of class. Once I arrived to class, I immediately started studying the vocab words. It should also be noted in his synthesis of over meta-analyses, John Hattie reported that one of the highest rated strategies was using reciprocal teaching.
Anything over. Priming the Mind. Then they plan their route to get to the store. The human brain reacts the same way. It is constantly searching for where it is and where it is headed. Before reading a chapter in social studies, for example, note the title and all the bold print. This primes the mind so when the student is reading the text, it recognizes the sections that contain the answers to the questions at the end of the chapter. One of the oldest forms of instruction is story telling.
Long before there were written words, people told stories to pass on their heritage through spoken language Widrich, People have communicated with each other through stories, and stories are considered a powerful means for increasing retention and transfer as a teaching strategy Widrich, L. Our brains are wired to understand and retain stories. The brain stores information according to its senses, but it also stores information in color. While working on my doctoral dissertation, I conducted a study with third and fourth graders regarding taking classroom notes using Mind Mapping drawing small pictures instead of writing words.
As I questioned the students about their lessons, they could easily describe the lesson content because of the pictures and the colors in their notes. I can see the orange fish lying on its side… dead. I can see the orange fish in my mind!
Teachers should require students to take notes in four different colored pens. Give yourself time to figure out how to successfully study for college! By trying out different ways to better commit stuff to memory, you will learn what works best for you.
Although, I highly recommend using elaborative rehearsal because it is something that can be applied to your studying, no matter what class you are stu dying for! Also, remembering to relate new information to old information is something that you can take with you for the rest of your life. BouJaoude, S. Retrieved November 27, What Is Elaborative Rehearsal?
Roberts, G. Educational Psychology Review, 26 3 , Psych Cognitive Psychology SU16 — 1. Benjamin, A. On the relationship between recognition speed and accuracy for words rehearsed via rote versus elaborative rehearsal. This is a great topic to talk about with college freshmen!! It really is a huge chance between high school and college studying.
I think you did well with explaining what we talked about in class in a more personal understanding way too! Once you know about it, it really makes a huge difference! Elaborative rehearsal can improve your ability to learn and later recall the information you learned. Rather than simply repeating facts that you're trying to learn, elaborative rehearsal can help you connect meaning to those facts and thus make them easier to remember. When it comes to Alzheimer's, the MIND diet has shown promise in reducing risk and promoting brain health.
